The most common question we get: 'How often should I have my artificial turf professionally cleaned?'
There's no one-size-fits-all answer. It depends on pets, kids, sun exposure, and where you live in San Diego County. Here's the breakdown.
The General Rule For a typical San Diego household with light use and no pets: every 12 months. The turf accumulates dust, pollen, and environmental debris that a hose can't fully remove. A yearly professional clean keeps fibers upright and prevents biofilm formation.
With One Dog Every 6–12 months. Dogs add urine, fecal matter, and oils to the turf. Even if you pick up solid waste immediately and rinse regularly, the uric acid crystals build up in the infill. By month 8–10, most single-dog households start noticing a faint ammonia smell on hot days.
With Multiple Dogs or Heavy Pet Use Every 3–6 months. Two or more dogs dramatically accelerate infill contamination. If your dogs use the turf as their primary bathroom, the 3-month interval is safer. San Diego's heat makes this non-negotiable — ammonia volatilizes faster at 90°F than at 70°F.
With Kids Playing Barefoot Every 6 months minimum. Kids are more sensitive to bacteria than adults. If your kids regularly play on the turf barefoot, you want the bacteria count kept low. Biofilm forms in the infill within 3–4 months and harbors E. coli, staph, and other pathogens.
Inland vs Coastal San Diego This matters more than people realize. Coastal areas (La Jolla, Pacific Beach, Encinitas, Carlsbad) get marine air and morning fog that keeps temps moderate. Inland areas (El Cajon, Rancho Bernardo, Poway, Santee) see summer temps 10–15°F higher. Higher heat means faster bacterial growth and more aggressive ammonia release.
If you're inland, move your cleaning interval one step more frequent. A 12-month coastal schedule becomes a 9-month inland schedule.
Signs You're Overdue - The turf smells when the sun hits it - You can smell it from inside the house - Fibers are matted and won't stand up when brushed - The infill feels compacted or crusty - Pets or kids are avoiding the turf - You see dark spots or discoloration
Seasonal Timing In San Diego, the best time to clean is spring (April–May) before peak heat, and fall (October–November) after the summer baking season. This gives you two windows per year for the 6-month schedule.
Don't Wait Until You Smell It By the time you notice the odor, the infill contamination is already significant. Cleaning on a schedule — before the smell appears — is cheaper and more effective than waiting for a problem.
