When Is the Best Time to Clean Artificial Turf in San Diego? (Seasonal Guide)

San Diego doesn't have dramatic seasons, but turf cleaning pros know the difference between a January clean and an August clean — and it matters more than most homeowners realize.

June: The Most Important Month to Clean If you do one professional cleaning per year, do it in June. Here's why:

  • Summer heat (July–September) causes ammonia compounds to volatilize more aggressively — meaning the smell is worse in hot weather
  • Cleaning in June means you go into peak summer with clean, fresh infill
  • Kids and pets use the yard most June through August — you want the safest, cleanest surface during peak usage
  • Rain is rare June–September, so cleaned infill stays cleaner longer

September–October: Post-Summer Refresh After a full summer of heavy use, turf infill has accumulated significant contamination. A September or October cleaning resets the turf before the holiday season and fall gatherings.

December–February: Low-Priority Window San Diego's "rainy season" naturally rinses the turf surface more frequently. Bacterial growth slows in cooler temps. If you're on a budget, this is the window to skip the professional clean if needed.

March–April: Pre-Season Prep Good time to clean if you want fresh turf before spring parties and events. Also the window when landscapers stir up the most debris — turf that's just been aerated or landscape-maintained nearby can trap extra dust and debris in the infill.

Temperature and Turf Smell: Bacterial activity in turf infill follows temperature almost linearly. At 65°F, smell is minimal. At 85°F, it's noticeably stronger. At 95°F+, it can become overwhelming. This is why San Diego homeowners in inland areas (El Cajon, Santee, Escondido, Lakeside) deal with much worse odor problems than coastal areas — their summer temps run 15–20°F hotter.

Our Recommendation: Schedule in June and September for full-year freshness. If budget allows, add a quick treatment in March. That's three cleanings per year for turf with 1–2 dogs — the gold standard for odor-free synthetic grass in San Diego.
